Orthopedics is the area of medicine that deals with the treatment of diseases of the locomotor system, particularly those involving injuries. These can relate to the entire human skeleton, with the exception of the head, as well as muscles, ligaments, tendons and peripheral nerves.

According to the INE, Orthopaedics was the medical specialty with the most consultations in general hospitals in 2019, accounting for 9% of consultations. Similarly, Orthopaedics accounted for around 17% of surgeries performed in the same year, excluding minor surgeries.
